Why would someone build a home with a basement ceiling of a little over 6 feet, and who would buy it?

OK, our deal fell through on a home we were set to buy due to an appraisal coming back much lower than what we offered and the seller’s unwillingness to lower his price. So, we looked at a BEAUTIFUL home in a prime neighborhood. The home was built in 1922 but is completely updated with beautiful cherry hardwood floors, granite kitchen with backsplash etc, ceramic floors in bathroom and a very beautiful design overall BUT my husband had to duck down when walking through the basement.

I agree that the area likely developed from a crawl space. Further back in time, people would have cellars, a cool space to store vegetables & canned goods. This developed into a crawl space which was still never thought of as part of the living quarters. For someone who had never really thought about living in (what had long been) the dampness below earth level, six feet would have seemed like a very ample, even grand, storage space.

I completely agree that, once you’ve gone that far why not another 6″ or a foot, but their thinking was coming from another direction. That little extra space would also require more excavation or a house perched higher up – and for an evolved cellar it wasn’t worth it.
