can someone tell me how everyone deals with the problem of dirty curtains?

can you tell me about the curtains of your home ?how often do you clean them and how?

In this day and age, we are brought up to have a clean house, clean floor, clean walls. We are brought up to clean everything.

This in turn makes us think we should regularly clean our curtains, just like we do our clothes.

I advise this is the worst thing you can do for your curtains. A lot of people have a hard time accepting this logic though, and will continue to wash them.

As I work in a curtain store I always advise my customers that the “least” you wash your curtains, the longer they will last.

With any fabric, the more you wash them, the more wear and tear & fading of the fabric will occur.

Everytime a curtain fabric is washed, there is a possible 3% shrinkage of the fabric.

Some people think this is not a lot of shrinkage. But when you get a 2 metre length curtain (7 foot length). 3% shrinkage of this length can be 6 cm (3 inches). Which is Huge in making a difference to the length of the curtain.

The reason why most curtains get dirty is due to dust. The reason why people get mildew or mould on there curtains is due to moisture. Dust + Water = Mildew & Mould.

So if you regularly vaccum your curtains (every few months) then this problem could be avoided and you won’t have dirty curtains. Use the attachment you would use for walls or furniture on your vaccum cleaner or what you use for cobwebs.

Most fabric curtain companies recommend washing curtains every 2-3 years. The longer you can leave it, the longer they will last. Just regularly vaccum clean every few months to eliminate dust and you have clean curtains.

BUT if you have to wash your curtains. If you have a circumstance or accident where you definitely need to wash the curtains because you had a child with dirty hands put their hands on the curtains, or you accidently spilled red wine on them, or the dog pulled the curtain down and ran around the yard with it. Then this is what i would recommend you do.

If you have to wash your curtains – then you need to work out what the fabric composition is and follow the appropriate care instructions. Is it a cotton fabric? Is it a polyester fabric? Is it a coated fabric? Is it a blend of 2 fibres like polyester 45%, cotton 55%.

Work out what the fabric properties are then find the appropriate care instructions and follow them. Every fabric is different.

If the curtain has a care label on….then follow THOSE instructions.

I’d also try not to get them dry cleaned, as a lot of dry cleaners don’t have expertise with curtain cleaning of “coated fabrics”. Not saying all don’t have expertise. Just a lot of them don’t know how to dryclean “coated” fabrics – There is the risk of drycleaning ruining the coating on the back of the fabric. It’s a LOT different to clothes. (try to avoid them) If you have another option on the label, then try that option first before going to a dry cleaner.

I’d recommend if you don’t know what the composition of the fabric is then do the following.

Recommendation:

Hand wash only – especially if it’s a coated fabrics.

The best place to hand wash them is in the bathtub. This is big enough so the fabric doesn’t get as crushed (as in washing machine in can get ruined and the creases are harder to get out.). It is also easier to clean with the space of the bathtub.

Wash with the appropriate detergent (usually a woolwash detergent).

After washing. (DO NOT hang out on the line), as direct sun on the fabric can ruin it, aswell as the clothes line itself can ruin the fabric.

I’d advise taking the curtain straight out of the bathtub and putting it straight back onto the track. (make sure their is plastic and towels underneath to stop ruining your floor with the water).

By putting it straight back onto the track, will allow the fabric to dry naturally, and also help against the shrinkage giving resistance with the water in the fabric running downwards. There will also be less creases and you won’t have to iron the curtain as much.

Let the curtains dry naturally. Open windows and turn on fans.

COTTON FABRICS

CARE LABEL No: 3
For use on printed or dyed cotton and linen fabrics not pigment dyed.
Remove hooks rings & trims before cleaning. Gently vacuum regularly with appropriate attachment. Washing:- Warm hand wash. Do not bleach. Do not tumble dry. Drip dry in the shade without delay. For best results hang curtains by their hooks to dry. Use warm iron lengthways. Dry cleanable P 50. Possible shrinkage 3%.

POLYESTER / COTTON BLEND

CARE LABEL No: 4
For use on polyester/cotton, polyester mixture & polyester fabrics, woven or knitted.
Remove hooks rings & trims before cleaning. Gently vacuum regularly with appropriate attachment. Warm hand wash. Do not bleach. Do not rub or wring. Drip dry in shade. For best results hang curtains by their hooks to damp dry immediately. Use warm iron. Dry cleanable P 50. Possible shrinkage 3%.

COATED FABRICS

CARE LABEL No: 6W
For use on acrylic foam backed fabrics and flock coated fabrics of both man-made fibres and cotton.
Regular care will minimize the need for additional cleaning. Gently vacuum with appropriate attachment. Always exercising caution when spot cleaning. Test cleaning on non exposed surface. Avoid excessive rubbing and abrasion. Cleaning Washing: Possible shrinkage 3% Remove hooks, rings and trims before cleaning. Curtains are heavy when wet. Professional wet cleaning recommended. DO NOT CLEAN IN DOMESTIC WASHING MACHINE! Hand wash in cool-to-warm (Max 40o C). Mild detergents, such as wool mixes are recommended. Do not bleach, soak, rub or wring. Drip dry in shade. Do not tumble dry. Hang curtains by their hooks to avoid coated sides touching. Do not use pegs. Do not fold curtains over clothes line. Do not iron/press coated side. Warm iron/press on fabric side only. Drycleaning: DO NOT DRYCLEAN.
