Unpleasant smells – get rid of the moldy smell of your home

Last summer, after wedding my long term boyfriend, I moved from my parents’ house to a new apartment. It was one of the sweetest feelings in the world, having our own place, with a beautiful view over a small park at the back of the building, with the beautiful sun bathed mornings in all the rooms of the house (the windows are oriented towards the East). We also bought a cute little Corby. All was going really well until winter came and our problems began. Not relationship problems, but mold problems. Yes, it happens to everybody and it’s just terrible.

I was so amazed to find out about the importance that insulation and ventilation had for a house. The walls that were towards the exterior of the building were dripping wet all the time, as were the windows. Me and my husband both started to research the problem. Luckily one of my best friends is an architect, so the solution to the problem came quite quickly, with an appropriate spray (must contain hypochlorite)  and a dehumidifier.

We were however left with another problem – the smell, the horrible, musty smell left behind by the mold. The house now smelled like a very old one and all the enthusiasm of having a new home was shadowed by it. My friend said it would take some time and patience to get rid of it, but it was exactly what I didn’t want to hear. So we started to search for solutions of getting rid of the leftover smell. After cleaning all the furniture and drapes, we went for a little online research and shopping and stumbled upon a great site on scented products and how to dramatically change the air quality and the moods of people living in certain spaces. This site went through all the natural alternatives you have when bringing scents into a home, but also doing in a stylish and personal way.

My absolute favorites were the incense sticks options, although to be honest, I think I’m the only one who likes them. After a lot of research on the options for diffusing essetial oils, for his study room, my husband opted for a essential oils cold diffuser. It was the most expensive piece we bought, but I think it was well worth it, and I’m thinking of getting one for the bedroom as well.
